Dilution: The Cremello Gene
In the third layer, dilution genes modify the base body color. The cremello/perlino gene is a dilution gene, represented by C, and an allele of C known as Ccr causes pigment dilution. If the horse is CC, it will be fully pigmented. In the heterozygous case, Cccr, red horses will have their color diluted, but any black pigment in not affected.
This causes bay horses to become buckskins, because the body color is diluted but the black points remain unaffected. Chestnut/sorrel horses that inherit one cremello gene will be palamino. If a red horse inherits two cremello genes, it will be cremello. The homozygous case adds even more confusion. With two copies of the cremello allele present, any coat color, including black, is diluted to a very pale cream with pink skin and blue eyes. These horses are sometimes called cremellos, sometimes perlinos, and sometimes albinos. They occur when two dilute-colored horses, such as palaminos are crossed. The advantages of perlinos and cremellos in breeding programs is that they carry two dilution genes. This means that they are guaranteed to pass on one to their foals and thus the foals will have some sort of modified base color. They may be palaminos, buckskins, perlinos, or cremellos.
